Test Your Car's Battery Before You Wind Up Stuck

Testing a car battery with a voltmeter is easy if you know the right way to do it. In addition to the voltmeter, you are going to need work gloves, a wire brush, and safety glasses.

Open the hood of the car after the engine and lights are off. Look to see if the car battery has visible signs of corrosion on the terminals, if so, clear off with the wire brush. The voltmeter is a simple testing device that has one black and red cable. The positive end is red, going to positive side of the car battery. The negative is black, and is placed on negative side of battery. Readings at or over 12.4 are good, anything at or under 12.2 means trouble.

If the reading is in the bad range, bring the car to our service center here at Bergstrom Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Oshkosh for a system check-up so you're not stuck on the roadside with a dead battery.
